Drying

Structural Drying

Water hides inside drywall, cabinets, subfloors and concrete. Structural drying uses air movers and dehumidifiers to pull that moisture out and log it every day until materials are dry.

Structural drying is the controlled removal of moisture from the building itself: walls, framing, subfloors, cabinets and concrete. It follows extraction and uses commercial air movers, dehumidifiers and daily moisture readings to bring materials back to a normal dry level.

Quick answer

Most rooms dry in about 3 to 5 days with commercial equipment. Hardwood, plaster and concrete take longer. Drying ends when readings match unaffected areas, not on a fixed date.

Equipment used

  • Air movers blow high-speed air across wet surfaces to speed evaporation.
  • LGR and desiccant dehumidifiers pull that moisture out of the air.
  • Wall cavity and floor drying systems push dry air into spaces fans cannot reach.
  • Moisture meters and thermal cameras confirm what is wet and when it is dry.

Why drywall is sometimes cut

Crews may cut a strip of drywall 12 to 24 inches above the floor, called a flood cut, when insulation behind it is soaked or the water was contaminated. Clean water losses caught early can often be dried in place with small holes for airflow instead.

How progress is tracked

  1. A dry standard is set by reading unaffected materials in the same home.
  2. Wet materials are read and mapped on day one.
  3. Readings are logged every day and equipment is moved as areas dry.
  4. Equipment comes out once wet materials match the dry standard.

These logs also support your insurance claim. Ask the crew for a copy. Read more about the full restoration process.

How it works

From first call to finished repairs

The restoration industry follows the IICRC S500 standard for water damage. Here is what that looks like in plain words.

  1. 01

    Call

Tell us what happened and where. We connect you with an available local restoration company that serves your ZIP code.

  2. 02

    Inspect

The crew stops the source, checks for electrical hazards, classifies the water and maps how far moisture has spread with meters and thermal imaging.

  3. 03

    Mitigate

Standing water is extracted, ruined materials are removed and drying equipment is set up. Moisture readings are logged every day.

  4. 04

    Restore

Once materials hit their dry goal, repairs begin: drywall, flooring, paint and anything else the water took out.

  1. 1First hours

    Stop and protect

Water shut off, power checked, valuables moved, photos taken.

  2. 2Hour 2 to 8

    Extract

Pumps and extractors remove standing water from floors and carpet.

  3. 3Day 1 to 4

    Dry and monitor

Air movers and dehumidifiers run while moisture is checked daily.

  4. 4Day 4 and on

    Rebuild

Drywall, floors and finishes are repaired after the dry goal is met.

FAQ

Common questions

How long does structural drying take?

Usually 3 to 5 days for drywall and wood framing. Hardwood floors, plaster and concrete slabs can take a week or more.

Can I turn the equipment off at night?

Keep it running. Turning off air movers and dehumidifiers stalls drying and can let humidity rise again.

Why is it so loud and warm?

Air movers are loud and dehumidifiers give off heat. Warm, dry air helps materials release moisture faster.

Will my electric bill go up?

Yes, drying equipment uses power. Some insurers reimburse the extra electricity, so keep your utility bills.
